The challenges of the job search
The job search is one of the most important things you’ll ever do. After all you are going to find yourself living with the consequences of your actions (or lack of action) for quite some time. So if you’re going to do it, you better do it right.
Despite its importance , lots of us really don’t know how to go about finding a new job. Judging by the general level of dissatisfaction many people feel for their jobs, and the inertia to get up and leave, I think its safe to say there are some fundamental challenges presented by the job hunt.
1)Knowing what you want
A lot of us fell into our jobs and careers, rather than making an active decision on where we would like to go. One of the reasons for this may be that answering the question
what job do i want
can be a difficult thing. In times gone by we had fewer options available to us, and perhaps in a strange sense that made things easier. With less choices you have less opportunity to make a “mistake”.
Often in our careers we are taught to do as we are told, and leave the big decisions to others. It can be a stressful time taking on the responsibility for yourself, and many of us find it difficult to decide what we actually want. And in the job search if you don’t know what your target is, its going to be very hard to hit it.
2)Lack of confidence
Even when you know what you want; more money, better prospects etc, isn’t that what everyone else wants? “Why should I be so lucky?” is a common way of thinking. It leads many people to adopt the attitude of settling. Or telling themselves that they will start looking for a new job, just not today.
To get past this you will need to develop your
confidence
in yourself. Then you have to deserve what you want, by doing what it takes to make it happen.
3)Knowing where to start
Ok, so lets say you know what you want, and you believe in yourself and your ability to make it happen. Now what? What exactly does it take to make your job search dreams come true? All the motivation in the world won't need to success if you don't know what to do.
Now for the good news
The solution to the challenges you face is to understand the process. Educate yourself. Find out what you need to give in order to get the job you want. You need to know what makes a successful job search, then have a plan to put that into action.
Plan
Fail to plan, plan to fail. Your plan is your foundation, your blueprint for action. Its how you turn your understanding into success, but there is another crucial thing you must do…..
Take action
“The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps – we must step up the stairs.” Vince Havner
Knowledge, acted upon is power. The right plan is your roadmap to success. But to get there you have to walk that path.
You have to put that plan into action consistently and without fail, that’s what will lead you to the job you want .
